Each column is one stitch and each row is one row. Read from row 1 at the bottom upward, and from stitch 1 on the left to the right. Heavy lines fall every 5 cells; the single row inside the border is a margin that isn't counted.
Work the duplicate stitch in yarn one weight heavier than the background, or the same yarn held double, and lay each stitch at the same size as the knit stitch beneath it. Carry the yarn across the back for gaps of 3–4 stitches or fewer instead of cutting it. Stitch and row counts stay the same at any gauge; a different gauge only changes the finished size.
